Solar PV panels are composed of many small photovoltaic cells – photovoltaic meaning they can convert sunlight into electricity. These cells are made of semi-conductive materials, most often silicon, a material that can conduct electricity while maintaining the electrical imbalance needed to create an electric field.
Omega Watt supplies 2 types of Solar Panels: Polycrystalline + Monocrystalline Solar Panels.
Polycrystalline Solar Panels
The Polycyrstalline or ‘Poly’ manufacturing process involves melting fragments of silicon into wafer sheets. Polycrystalline panel efficiency ratings will typically range from 15% to 17%. However, thanks to new technologies, polycrystalline panels are now much closer in efficiency to monocrystalline solar panels than they have been in the past. Polycrystalline panels are popular among homeowners. Polycrystalline tends to have a more blue colour tinge.

Monocrystalline Solar Panels
Monocrystalline or ‘Mono’ cells are manufactured by cutting single sheets from a silicon bar. These single crystal cells allow for a greater movement of electrons resulting in slightly higher efficiency. Monocrystalline Solar Panels tend to be black in colouration.
Monocrystalline Half-Cell Solar Panels
Half-cell Solar Panels have solar cells that are cut in half, which improves the panel’s performance and durability. Traditional 60-cell and 72-cell panels will have 120 and 144 half-cut cells, respectively. When solar cells are halved, their current is also halved, so resistive losses are lowered and the cells can produce more power. Smaller cells experience reduced mechanical stresses, so there is a decreased opportunity for cracking and produce higher output ratings.
